Personal Protective Equipment & First Aid

Tree climbing injuries are very unforgiving. A few dollars spent on safety gear may prevent thousands of dollars in medical bills and lost productivity. Working with a full load-out of proper safety gear protects you and your livelihood. It also shows your customers and employees you are serious about safety and doing the job right.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for anyone working in the arb world. Every climber should own and use (at least): a helmet, chainsaw protection for the legs, eye and hearing protection, and gloves. Ground workers also need a full compliment of safety gear, depending on tasks performed. See the Z133 standard for the full requirements.

Modern PPE has greatly improved in the last few years. Helmets have gotten more comfortable, with better adjustment and fitting. Chainsaw protection in particular has improved, with lighter, more comfortable chainsaw pants and chaps improving safety and mobility in the field.

First Aid for tree work must cover high-risk activities in locations that can be remote or difficult to access. If you or a coworker are injured, who will administer first-aid until EMTs arrive?
