“ I bought this as part of an upgrade over my former combo pruner/saw rig, and I have to give a shout-out to Andre, the customer service guy on the phone at WesSpur, who helped me get set up. I already had two four-foot Marvin poles from owning the Big Shot for several years, and Andre totally hooked me up so I could make use of those poles in a pruner/pole saw system with quick connecting pruner head and pole saw head. Thanks Andre! The rest of this review is specifically about the pruner head.
First the good. This tool is solid; from the weight of it you know it's made from strong metal and built to last. I love the big 1-3/4" opening, and with the dual pulley this thing slices right through the branches that fit in its mouth.
The meh. The dual pulley makes for a lot of travel in the cutting action. I've got long arms and I reach pretty high up the pull rope to start my cutting pull, but I often haven't completed the cut before running out of pull; in which case I have to make a couple wraps of the rope on my hand to shorten the rope and complete the cut.
The bad. I was using this for just the third time today - haven't cut more than 30 branches with it to date - and the metal ring clamp holding the pull rope onto the head gave out, flying away to who knows where. That was the end of using the pruner for the day. Fortunately I swapped in the saw and was back in business!
So it works well, when it works. But a pole pruner without a rope is like a Jack in the Box named Charlie - well, actually worse, because a Charlie in the Box can still pop out and do his job, unlike a pruner when its rope comes off. So Fred Marvin might want to think about putting a heavier duty, more firmly holding clamp on the pull rope. I think I should get more than 30 cuts before having to start replacing parts. ”
